Here's what I did last night. Again, I used a verigated thread. But this time, the thread was different colours of red...no white in it. And instead of stitching a row, and then back again, I completed each stitch before moving on to the next. I did that to try and get away from the "striped" effect that showed on the swan cross stitch I finished a few days ago. And I'm very pleased with the results. The effect is subtle, but looks a lot nicer than if I had stitched this just in regular red thread. I think I've found my next Christmas card project!
