I picked up a nasty head cold on Friday, and have been sneezing, sniffling and coughing all weekend. Although, I am starting to feel better now. But, I don't like being sick. It keeps me from doing the things I want to do, and I don't like that.
This does give me an idea for a post today though. And, forgive me, as I climb up on my soapbox and start preaching. The subject: medication.
I usually don't like to take over the counter medication. And I can count on one hand the number of prescriptions I have had filled in the last 10 years. I usually resort to old fashioned remedies, vitamins, and just "taking care of myself". The reason I do this? I don't believe that medication does anything to HELP a cold. It just covers up the symptoms of the cold. I will however, take an occasional decongestant or cough suppressant. Usually only when I NEED to attend a meeting at work, or HAVE to work on a project, or NEED to get some sleep. But, normally, I refuse to take anything unless it helps my body fight the cold. Over the counter medications have soooo many side-affects, most of them your body is not aware of. Your liver works double time everytime you take medication. It has to be filtered out of your body somehow, and your liver is where this happens. Doesn't matter what type of medication it is. Not to mention what most cold medication does to your heart rate, and blood pressure. In most cases, a normally healthy individual won't notice a slight raise in blood pressure when taking a decongestant. And usually, you are feeling so bad to begin with, that any side-effect from the medication is usually written off as part of the cold, instead of from the medication. But, the fact is that over the counter medication is so bad for your body. So, is it worth it to put that into your body just so you can feel better for a few hours?
I used to think that I didn't have time to deal with a cold, and always took medication, and went to work sick, and tried to keep up with all my "chores". Then, I changed my thinking. Now, I take time off of work. I call in sick. I stay in bed, or on the couch. I don't try and do too much. I give myself permission to take care of myself. I take naps during the day. I watch TV and movies. I take vitamins. And Cold-FX. I also take a Immune Enhancer from the Health Food Store. It's got garlic, mushrooms, Oregano leaf, and Olive leaf (amongst other stuff) in it, and it really does work. I use steam to break up the sinus congestion. I drink lots of juice and water and tea (no soda or pop!). I eat healthy, somewhat bland food. The soup I eat has to be homemade. I won't eat canned soup. I don't need the extra salt raising my blood pressure either!
The result. I feel 100 times better than I used to. I seem to kick a cold a lot faster than I used to. And I don't get as many colds as I used to.
What do you do to make yourself feel better when you are sick?

I started to get a cold sore last week so started taking Olive Leaf. The cold sore never really developed although it was still "there". Never got the painful throbbing associated with cold sores, so I'm sold on Olive Leaf! The problem with doctors and over the counter meds is that they treat symptoms not the cause.
