Seagull sighting

You know how when you are driving, and there is a group of birds on the side of the road, and they all take flight as you approach, and it looks like you will hit them, but you just keep driving because you know they will fly out of the way, even though it doesn't look like they will, but they always do??
Well, it doesn't always happen like that. Hubby hit a seagull today. Smacked him with the front of the truck as we were driving, and ran over him as he fell to the ground. The bird never went under our wheels, he just went under the truck as we drove on. In the rear view mirror we saw him on the ground, hurt and flapping around, but still alive. I don't know what happened after that. In hubby's words, "What are we supposed to do? Stop the truck in the middle of the highway, and throw it into reverse, just to check on some shit-hawk that was too stupid to get out of the way?"
I suppose he's right - but I still can't help but feel bad for the stupid bird.
