Hubby decided he wanted to cook a brisket. Nice and slow on the BBQ on a lazy Sunday. So, last Tues or Wed, I called the butcher I've been frequenting lately. Free range beef brisket, about 5lbs, around $40, and I wanted to pick it up on Friday. No problem they said. I ordered it from the place close to work, so on Friday, I made sure I packed a little cooler and some ice packs with me, as it's a long drive from work to home.
Friday after work, I get to the store, and at first the guy behind the counter can't find my brisket. He finally called the meat manager, and located the brisket in a box in the cooler. He came out of the cooler with this very large package of meat and put it on the scale. 5 kgs!
"Ummm, excuse me" I said, a little worried. "I ordered five pounds, not five kilos".
"That's ok", he replied. "I'll cut it for you."
So, off he went to cut up the brisket, as I took a big sigh of relief.
He came back with a package that was just under 5lbs. It cost $37.33 and I packed it into my little cooler bag, and drove home.
The next day, I got a voice mail message from the butcher shop. "We gave you the wrong meat yesterday. Please call us back." Apparently, they had given me someone's order of flank steak, instead of beef brisket. Now, I didn't actually see the meat up close before he packaged it, but even if I did, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I called them back. After explaining the situation, he offered to swap me the flank steak for the brisket if I were just to come back to the store.
"Um. Unfortunately, that's a bit of a problem", I said. "I don't live there. I live an hour away. I just work over that way, so that's why I stopped there. I really don't want to drive two hours to exchange the meat. Can I just bring it back on Monday, and get a refund?"
He told me to keep the flank steak, and come back on Monday. He would not only give me a refund, but would also give me the brisket free of charge. So, that is what I did.
Only one small problem. On Monday, I forgot to bring the receipt when I went back to the store. So, I didn't know how much the cost was. I said "around $33", so that is what they gave me for a refund. And the brisket, they cut a huge chunk, about 6lbs, and gave that to me for nothing.
The final tally: Cost was $37.33. The refund was $33.00. We got 5lbs of flank steak, and 6lbs of beef brisket for $4.33 or $0.39 cents a lb!!
PS - the flank steak got marinated and BBQ'd and despite the fact that our taste buds were expecting brisket, it turned out really good! We gave some to my parents, cooked the rest, and ate the leftovers for lunches. (cut up flank steak, pita break, homemade tzatziki, lettuce, sprouts...mmmmm!)
And the brisket? It's chillin' in the freezer waiting for another weekend to be BBQ'd.
