I recently signed up at work for payroll deductions for the United Way. It’s only a few dollars a paycheque, and I’ll get a much needed tax receipt at the end of the year. Our company is a big sponsor of the United Way, and they match all dollars that we contribute, so it’s a good thing. The United Way came to our office last month, and did a bit of a presentation. I was actually very surprised to hear of all the good things that they do in the community. I was especially surprised to hear that they have an “Active Aging Program” that matches seniors with members to make sure they are active, engaged, and overall doing ok. I don’t often hear about seniors programs – there seems to be so few of them. And I know it’s an issue for a lot of my friends who have aging parents. So, I signed up. Just a few dollars a month to do my part. And asked that my dollars get allocated to the “Seniors programs”.
Then I got a “Thank you” email from the United Way. I know it’s just a stock email, that they send to everyone. But I took one look at the picture and the caption…
“Thanks to your act of love, another lonely senior like George gets to build lasting friendships that keep them connected to their community.”
OMG, doesn’t George just look so happy!! And the other two as well. Ok – maybe I’m getting to be one of those old sentimental fools, but I love this pic! And George’s smile made me think I did the right thing!
