2012 - Movie Review

2012. The movie.
I usually like "end of the world as we know it" kind of movies, so I was kind of excited to see this one. I didn't read any reviews on the movie. So, I had no idea what to expect.
The special effects were great. But, in scene after scene, the main characters were placed in life or death situations with only seconds to escape before catastrophe struck. And, inexplicably, they always managed to make it out at the last second. I could have done without that.
The main character was a divorced father of two, trying to re-connect with his kids, and having problems dealing with the mother's new boyfriend, whom the kids seem to like better than they like him. But then, the father, who can't seem to do anything right in the past, suddenly makes all the best decisions, and becomes the hero as he saves his family from disaster. mmmmmm. Sound familiar? Think Tom Cruise, in War of the Worlds. Or Dennis Quaid in The Day After Tomorrow. I could have done without that particular stereotype.
The cast was a mishmash of actors from all arenas. John Cusack, Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton, Danny Glover, Amanda Peet, just to name the most recognized ones. Individually, on their own, they are all great. But collectively, they just didn't gel. There was little to no chemistry between any of them, and I could have done without the Woody Harrelson character all together.
It was long! I stopped timing it after 2 hours, but the fact that I was timing it instead of watching it proves just how boring the movie really was.
Some of it was filmed in B.C. Remember the Paris tunnel scenes? That wasn't Paris. That was the Cassiar Tunnel in Vancouver. Yellowstone National Park? Nope...Kamloops, B.C.
Overall....great special effects, and worth it just to see that. But the budget definitely was for the special effects, because they spent little money on the storyline, directing, or character development. Watching it made me wish the world was ending, because this movie certainly dragged on and on and on! It wasn't a "disaster movie", it was a "disaster of a movie".
I give this one a thumbs down.
