Star Trek, the Movie

Are you a Trekkie?
I am. Sort of. I'm not a huge Trekkie. I don't go to those conventions, and I don't dress up in my favourite character's costumes, and I don't know one word of Klingon. But, I do love the Star Trek Movies, and have all 10 of them. (Well, 11 now). I was hesitant to see the new one, because it was all new cast members. But I got it for Christmas, and I've watched it 4 times now.

My first, initial response, was "I hate it". It was flashy, and bright, and not at all similar to the Star Trek that I fell in love with. The movie had all these bright lines in it...refractions from light sources....whatever you call it. I thought it was annoying. Apparently it was intentional.

Then there was the colors. Blue. Gone were the earth tones and of the Next Generation. Everything looked crisp, and blue, or white, and just over the top bright.

Then there was the sound. The low rumbling sound of the Enterprise engines in the background was gone. The 'beep-beep' of the communicators...I don't remember hearing that once in the whole movie.

Then the cast. All new. Young. Supposed to represent my favourite characters in their younger days. Which I was willing to play along with. Until Spock and Uhura got together. (Wait a minute!! Did that just happen!!!! I couldn't beleive it!)

But then I watched it again. And then again. And then once more. And I have to admit it, I kind of like it now.

One: I'm a big fan of both Eric Bana and Zachary Quinto. I loved that they brought back Leonard Nimoy as the original Spock. And I'm liking Chris Pine now too.

Two: it kind of grew on me. I didn't like the idea that it wasn't true to the original storyline, or original cast, but the writers threw in that whole alternate reality part, so that kind of made up for it all. Basically, it gave them a way to do what they want with the characters without being true to the original. OK...I'll play along.

Three: It didn't have the same Star Trek feel. Which is probably due to the fact that it was directed by J.J. Abrams (of Mission Impossible III -- a terrible movie!). But, this wasn't a BAD movie....just different.

I give it a thumbs up.
And, I'm actually looking forward to the next installment now, of which I'm sure there will be one soon.
