I rented, and watched, the movie “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” last night. It’s the Swedish version of the movie… I don’t think the American version has even been released yet, has it? Anyways, here’s a question for you… If faced with a foreign film, do you choose to watch the movie in the original language, with English subtitles? Or do you watch it with the English dubbed into the movie?
I chose Swedish, with English subtitles. Why? Because it just seems more authentic to me that way. Besides, I can’t stand watching a movie where the person’s lips move at a different rate or time than the words that come out of them.
My review of the movie? It was good. It was very true to the book, with just a few minor details. The book was huge, and contained a lot of little details and history on the characters. Obviously, for time, they had to leave a lot out of the movie. And there were little things that were re-written for the movie, but I think they did a great job on what was left out, and what was included. The movie kept me suspenseful, even though I knew what was coming.
One thing I have to admit… I think the Swedes will probably do a lot better with the movie than the Americans. I haven’t heard anything about the American version yet, but I doubt if it will be as good. Do you remember the movie “Insomnia”? I watched the original Norwegian version (1997) before the American version (2002) came out. And it was great! It won an award for best film at the Norwegian film festival. But, then the American version came along. Almost exactly like the Norwegian version, only it had a bunch of A-list actors in it (Al Pacino, Robin Williams and Hilary Swank). One would think that it would be as good, if not better. But, it sucked. The original had such a dark undertone to the movie, but the American version just could not capture the same feeling. I get the feeling that the same will be true for the American version of the “Dragon” movie. But, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
