I completed another book yesterday. I finally read a book that I’ve been wanting to read for a long time… “Under the Tuscan Sun” by Frances Mayes.
It was a good book, but not at all like the movie, which I’ve seen a dozen times or more. The movie was a romantic comedy and all about finding yourself and finding romance. The book was a non-fiction account of how she (and her husband) bought and restored a villa in Tuscany. She not only talks about the villa and the restoration work, but also goes into length about the food, the garden work, the people she meets, and the side trips around the county that she takes. It even included some of her favourite recipes. It was a great way to “visit” Italy for a week or two, if only in my mind. The book was wonderfully descriptive. So much so, that I could smell the smells, and hear the sounds that she was describing. She’s been awarded rave reviews for her writing, but I didn’t find her writing to be particularly consistent. Certain sections grabbed me and sucked me right in, but other sections rambled on and on. Sometimes she would jump from one thought to another too quickly, and I would get lost. At first, I didn’t think I would finish the book, then I would read a really good part, and be hooked again.
I give the book 2 stars out of 5.
I give the movie 5 out of 5.
I guess I’m just more of a romantic kind of person.
And of course, reading about Italy has awoken the need in me to “eat Italian”. For lunch the last 2 days, I’ve had this…
It’s Herb and Olive bread, with sundried tomato cream cheese, topped with tomato, brie cheese, fresh basil, and toasted in the toaster oven until the cheese melts, and the tomato is warm, and the bread goes just a little crunchy. Mmmmmm! Delicious! Or should I say... "Delizioso!"
