This weekend, I finished reading...
"The House I Loved", by Tatiana De Rosnay
It was actually a lovely written book. I have her other book "Sarah's Key" but haven't started it yet. I decided to read this one first. And, now I can't wait to read Sarah's Key. I love the way she writes.
The story is about a widow named Rose, who is living in a house in Paris in the late 1800's, during the renovation of Paris. Her house is about to be expropriated for the renovations, and it tells the story of how she reacts to that news. It was written as series of letters from the main character to her late husband, and other letters related to her and the storyline.
The book was really easy to read, and the characters were very real. I was impressed with the connection that Rose had with her home, and her neighbourhood. That kind of connection just doesn't exist in today's internet based world. And it brought home, just how different the world has become. It also dealt with a part of history that I knew nothing about (and likewise, I would think that a lot of people aren't aware of.) For that reason alone, I would recommend the book. Now, although I enjoyed the writing, the characters, and the story, I however wasn't too impressed with the ending (I won't say anything more than that). But that is the only reason I give this 4 stars out of 5, instead of a 5 out of 5.
