A lady that I used to work with called me while I was in Victoria. I connected with her on Monday, and have emailed/talked to her a couple of times this week. The reason for the call? The company that she works for (and that I used to work for) has been sold, and re-organized. They are looking for a new CFO. They thought of me. They basically called, and offered me the job. Salary wise, it was approx. 20% more than what I'm making now. But, it was a contract position. 6 months, with a possibility to renew to full time.
So starts my dilemma.
I did a lot of thinking over the last couple of days. I did my list of PROs and CONs. And what it boiled down to was this question….Do I give up the security of a full-time job, for more money?
In any other economic situation, I think I would have jumped at the chance. But the state of the economy has me thinking twice. The company I work for now is in IT development. We are doing well. The company offering the job is in the automotive industry…albeit, commercial automotive, which is not quite as bad as the passenger or retail segment (If GM falls, it will not affect them). But, it’s probably not as secure as one would like.
While I don’t see the effect of the economic situation, I do realize that it’s made an impact on a lot of other people’s lives. Yes, my RRSPs are low, but our mortgage rate is the lowest I’ve ever imagined. We have no credit card debt. And we both have secure positions in companies that are in somewhat stable industries. (knock on wood).
Long story short, I finally decided. I called her back and told them "Thanks, but No Thanks".
I can’t take the chance that I would be out of work in 6 months…or even a year from now. The extra money each month would be nice (it meant that I would be able to afford to buy a new car). But, I like my job. I like working from home. And I like the security of working for a company that is doing well economically in these tough times.
Can you remind me of that next week when I’m so busy at work that I want to pull my hair out? :-)

If I were in your shoes, I would have made the same decision. You did right.
Think you made the right decision. Your commute to work is a lot less hectic with this job and you don't have to worry about the price of gas either!!! Looks like you've been busy with your new camera.
thanks for the comments.
I too know I made the right decision, but sometimes the dollar signs can make you think twice about your decisions.
