Movie Review

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

The 4th in the X-Men series of movies. But the first in the chronological line of the story. Don't you just hate it when that happens!? They put out a movie after the 3rd movie, but it really should have been the first movie. So, why didn't they put it out first?? It seems to be a real trend these days. I think it started with Star Wars. Others that have done it are Underworld, Star Trek, and now X-Men, just to name a few. At least when the Godfather did it, they did it with a bit of class. They were able to tell the "beginning" of the story, by weaving it into the fabric of the Godfather II. You still continued with the movie chronologically, but you were taken back to the beginning in a series of flashbacks. It made for a long movie, but there is no denying which movie comes first in the series.
Anyways, back to X-Men....I was a little disappointed in this one. I love Hugh Jackman, and Liev Schrieber (remember, they did Kate & Leopold together back in 2000 or 2001?). But, I thought that there would be "more" to it. It was almost like the writers and director had some good ideas, but didn't quite know where to go with it. So, they just shot a whole bunch of sequences with Hugh looking really buff, and Liev looking really evil, threw a whole bunch of fight scenes in there, and then hoped for the best. Unfortuately, it didn't work.
There were a few issues with timelines, and such...(I don't want to give anything away, but tell me this...if someone loses his memory, how is he supposed to remember where he put his jacket and bike? -- things like that, mean that the writers just didn't spend enough time thinking about the plot line to realize the mistakes they made).
Overall, it was entertaining, but lacking in substance. I particulary liked the cameo by Patrick Stewart (I absolutely love his acting!), and the fact that it was filmed here (in and around Vancouver) makes it worth watching to see if you can see anything locally familiar (I didn't).
