So, did you catch the Survivor Season Finale last night? I don't normally watch reality TV. But, I used to watch Survivor. Well, I watched the first couple of seasons. Then, didn't watch it for awhile. Anyways, I started watching this one a few episodes in, and got hooked. Mostly because there's really nothing else on TV lately that I find interesting. And, even though I missed a few episodes, I had to watch the ending.
At one point, when Jeff was saying that they were going to read the votes "for the last time", I thought he was referring to the end of the show as we know it. Not so. Apparently, they have another show starting soon (Sept?).
Anyways, I thought that it was kind of anti-climatic. I didn't think Russell would win, but they showed most of the votes before they read them, so it was clear that he didn't get any votes. Sandra won. Not that I care. The people I was interested in seeing (Rob, Colby, Rupert, Jerry), were voted out before the final three.
Anyways, all this "reality" got me thinking about the terminology that we've all become accustomed to lately. If it weren’t for reality shows, would we really use the following words/phrases in day to day life?
- voted out
- tally (as in “I’ll go tally the votes”)
- alliances
- challenges
- immunity / immunity idol / immunity necklace / hidden immunity idol
- exile
- elimination
- advance to the next/final round

And then, there is the question....how "real" is reality TV? Well, I think most of it is scripted or "forced". I don't think it's real. And I usually don't bother to waste my time watching. I was certain that the "reality" fad would disappear soon, so I'm actually surprised that it's lasted this long.
