Super Sad True Love Story, by Gary Shteyngart
I found this book because the author was on our local news station promoting the book when it first came out. The news reporter that was interviewing him had read the book herself, and was gushing about how great it was. I decided to put it on my list of 'must reads', and recently purchased it for my Kobo.
Super Sad True Love Story is a novel about Lenny Abramov, a Russian American who meets a woman in Rome, Eunice Parks. But, don't let the title of the book fool you. It is not your typical sappy love story, or romance novel. No, this book is more about relationships in a futuristic version of the world (in particular, America). In this future world, everyone carries around these technology devices called an äppärät. People are obsessed with technology, health, your credit rating, and fashion. Privacy seems to be a thing of the past. And no one reads books anymore. People simply scan text for data electronically, as books are now considered old and smelly. (Ironically, I was reading this on my Kobo!). It doesn't say how far into the future this book takes place, but it has the dark satirical undertone that makes you think that this "future" is not so far away.
The writing style of this book is flowing, and very easy to read. The chapters are set as diary entries and a series of instant messaging type communications. It was very original, funny, and exciting to read. It was completely different than any book I've read in a long time, and I highly recommend it. I give it 4 1/2 stars out of 5.
