insane

I'm so insanely busy at work lately, I hardly have a chance to breathe. Really. It's been insane this week.
Then I got a phone call from an old co-worker. The company we used to work for was great. It was like one big family, with people who had been there for years and years. He left the company about 10 years ago. I got laid off just over 6 years now. But we both keep in touch with a lot of the people that are still there.
He called to tell me that the economy took another victim today. 30% of the staff of the company we used to work for, got let go today. Including the VP of Finance, and staff that were there well before I started (and I started in 1989!!). Can you imagine? 25 years of doing the same job, only to be laid off now?
It sure makes me count my blessings now...
1) that I was laid off while I was still young enough to carve out another career somewhere else.
2) that I wasn't still there when this day happened. When I did get laid off, it was hard, but the economy was good. I managed well because of that.
3) that my current job is busy...that I'm busy...and that I'm good at my job...security!!

I'm sure the next couple of days will be filled with phone calls and emails from friends. All I can say is that I wish everyone the best of luck. Meanwhile, I'm not going to complain anymore about the mountain of emails I have to respond to, or the ton of work that needs to be done. I'm just going to put my nose to the grindstone and count my lucky stars.
