The Postmistress, by Sarah Blake
They always say you can't judge a book by it's cover. But, that is the very reason I picked up this book in the first place. The cover art just looked so appealing to me. (Actually, I put this book on my Christmas Wish List, and Santa put it under the tree for me).
That, and the fact that it is one of "Heather's Picks". Chapters/Indigo's CEO has a list of books that she chooses as her "picks" of books to read. I've read a few of her selections over the years. I always like to try new authors, and have found quite a few good ones through her selections. You can check out her list at chapters.ca or click on the link... click here
The book takes place in the 1940s during the bombings in London. It follows a few characters, one of which is the Postmistress in a small Cape Cod town, and another is a radio reporter working out of London. It is the story of how their lives interconnect, and how they are influenced by the war, and what is happening around them.
At first, I had a hard time with this book. The writing style was different than what I'm used to. It seemed that the author kind of jumped around a little too much, and her paragraphs would start with one idea, and end on another. In the beginning, I actually found it difficult to read, as I had to slow down and re-read certain sections to fully understand what was going on. But, the characters and the story kept me intrigued. So much so, that I found myself wanting to read through it slowly so that I could absorb all the details.
Overall, I liked this book. I read a review somewhere that said this book is a great selection for a book club... and I have to agree. It gave you a lot to think about, and there were a lot of discussion points throughout the novel. The story and characters kept it interesting to read. But the writing style was a little awkward for me, so I will only give it 3 1/2 stars out of 5.
